What makes a prompt useful
Good prompts explain the goal, relevant context, constraints and desired format. Instead of asking for “a better email,” state the audience, tone and action you want the reader to take.
Reusable prompt patterns
Writing and editing
“Edit the text below for clarity. Keep the meaning, use plain language and list any factual claims I should verify.”
Planning
“Turn this goal into a seven-day plan. Give each step a clear result, estimated effort and dependency.”
Learning
“Explain this topic at beginner level, then test me with five questions. Do not reveal answers until I reply.”

Build prompts that are easy to review
A dependable prompt defines the goal, useful context, constraints and output format. Replace “write about backups” with “create a six-step backup checklist for a Windows laptop owner, explain which files each step protects, and flag any step that could overwrite data.” The second request gives the model a reader, a boundary and a result you can inspect.
Use a short prompt cycle
- Draft: ask for an outline or decision table before requesting polished prose.
- Challenge: ask what assumptions were made and what information is missing.
- Verify: check factual claims against current primary sources.
- Refine: request changes to named sections instead of repeatedly regenerating everything.
Provide examples when tone or structure matters, but remove private names, credentials and business data. If the answer depends on a specific device, application version, country or date, state that context. A prompt cannot force a model to know information it does not have.
Reusable review prompt
After receiving a draft, ask: “List the factual claims in this answer, mark which ones may change over time, and tell me what primary source could verify each claim.” Treat that list as a checking plan rather than proof. For decisions involving money, health, law, security or account recovery, consult the relevant professional or official provider instead of relying on generated advice alone.
