Separate claims from presentation
A fluent answer can mix accurate background with one invented date, citation or product feature. Break the response into claims that can be tested: names, numbers, quotations, compatibility statements and cause-and-effect conclusions. Mark which claims would change your decision if wrong.
Prioritize those high-impact claims rather than trying to verify every connecting word. A polished tone, a table or a list of sources is presentation; none of them proves accuracy.
Open the original source
Ask for sources, but then open them yourself. Confirm the page exists, the author or organization is credible, the date fits the question and the cited passage supports the claim. Search a quotation inside the source rather than trusting the AI’s page number.
Prefer manuals, official support pages, standards and original research over summaries. For current software instructions, make sure the source covers the version you use.
Check numbers independently
Recalculate totals with a calculator or spreadsheet and verify the units. Percentages are especially easy to misread: distinguish percentage points from percent change, and check the starting value. For a comparison, confirm that both figures use the same time period and definition.
Ask the AI to show its assumptions, then test them. A detailed chain of calculations can still begin with an incorrect input.
Use a second search, not a second paraphrase
Asking the same model again may repeat the same error. Search the key claim independently and compare at least two authoritative sources when the decision matters. If reliable sources disagree, report the disagreement and its reason instead of forcing a single answer.
Reverse-search unfamiliar images and confirm that screenshots show the claimed product, place and date.
Publish with traceable evidence
When using AI-assisted research, keep the source links and your verification notes. Rewrite the conclusion from the evidence you actually checked. Remove citations you did not open. If uncertainty remains, say what is unknown and what new evidence would settle it.
