How to Speed Up a Slow Web Browser
Find whether tabs, extensions, a profile, the network or the computer is making web browsing slow.

Find whether tabs, extensions, a profile, the network or the computer is making web browsing slow. Use this practical checklist as a starting point and confirm model-specific instructions with the service or device maker.
Separate browser speed from connection speed
Try the same page in another browser and another device on the same network. If every device is slow, investigate the connection or router. If only one website is affected, the problem may be at that site. If one browser profile is slow everywhere, continue with browser-specific checks.
Measure with the same page and connection after each change instead of relying on a general impression.
Update and restart cleanly
Save work, update the browser from its official menu and restart the computer. Close unused tabs and pause large downloads or video calls during the test. Built-in browser task managers can show a tab or extension consuming unusual memory or processor time.
Ending a browser task can discard unsaved form entries, so save first.
Audit extensions
Disable extensions you do not need, especially those with permission to read and change every website. Test with all optional extensions off, then enable one at a time. Remove anything installed unexpectedly or from an untrusted source.
Private or incognito mode is a useful comparison, but extensions may still run there if explicitly allowed.
Clear only the site data that matters
For a page that behaves incorrectly, clear that site’s cache and cookies rather than erasing everything immediately. Removing cookies signs you out and may delete local preferences. A full profile reset affects more settings, so sync or export important bookmarks first.
Do not install a “browser cleaner” that requests broad access to solve ordinary cache problems.
Check the computer and network
Heavy memory pressure, a nearly full drive, overheating or unwanted software can slow every browser. Run the operating system’s security scan and update graphics or network drivers from the device maker when a documented issue calls for it. If another device also struggles, follow our slow Wi-Fi guide.
