Prepare, transfer and verify data on a new iPhone before erasing, selling or trading in the old device. Use this practical checklist as a starting point and confirm model-specific instructions with the service or device maker.

Prepare before opening the new phone

Update the old iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi and power, and make a fresh backup. Know the Apple Account password and device passcode. Check trusted phone numbers and whether the new phone needs a physical SIM or eSIM transfer.

If the old phone is unreliable, prioritize a verified backup before attempting a major update.

Choose a supported transfer method

Quick Start can guide a direct device transfer. An iCloud backup downloads data and apps after setup, while Finder or Apple Devices can restore a computer backup. An encrypted computer backup can preserve additional protected data; keep its password safe.

Keep devices close, connected to power and undisturbed until the process completes.

Wait for background downloads

The home screen may appear before photos, messages and applications finish syncing. Keep the new iPhone on Wi-Fi and power. Check status inside Photos and important apps. Media and offline downloads can take hours.

Open the information you care about instead of judging the transfer by icon count.

Verify accounts and accessories

Test calls, messages, mobile data, email, banking apps and the password manager. Confirm your watch, headphones, car and trusted computers connect. Check authenticator and recovery apps before signing out on the old phone.

Review privacy and location settings because some choices may need approval again.

Erase the old phone only after verification

Use the new device for several days if possible. Unpair accessories as directed, sign out when required, remove SIM cards and follow Apple’s erase process. Confirm the phone returns to the setup screen before handing it over.
