Fixing Common PC and Laptop Driver Issues
Identify the affected device, use trusted driver sources and recover with update, rollback or reinstall steps in the right order.

A driver lets Windows communicate with hardware. Symptoms include missing audio, unstable Wi-Fi, display glitches, unknown devices or a problem that began immediately after an update. First identify the exact device and when the symptom started.
Identify the device and error
Restart once, reconnect removable hardware and test another port or known-good cable. Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start. A warning icon can help, but a device can malfunction without one. Open Properties and record the status message, error code, driver provider, version and date.
Use the PC or motherboard model, not only a vague device description. For an unknown device, its hardware IDs under Properties → Details can help the manufacturer’s support team identify it.
Use trusted update sources
- Open Settings → Windows Update and install relevant normal updates.
- Review Optional updates carefully; do not install every driver simply because it appears.
- For laptops and prebuilt PCs, prefer the manufacturer support page for chipset, firmware, touchpad, audio and power-management packages.
- For a separately installed GPU, use the GPU manufacturer’s official driver.
- Create a restore point or backup before firmware and major driver changes.
Avoid third-party “driver updater” applications. They can misidentify hardware, install unsuitable packages or bundle unwanted software.
Roll back when an update caused the issue
In Device Manager, open the device’s Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver when available. Select a reason, restart and test. If the button is disabled, Windows may not retain a previous package.
For a recently installed Windows update, review Settings → Windows Update → Update history. Remove an update only when timing and evidence strongly connect it to the fault, and understand that uninstalling security updates can create risk.
Reinstall a corrupted device entry
Download the correct replacement driver first, especially for network hardware. In Device Manager choose Uninstall device, but leave “attempt to remove the driver” unchecked unless official instructions require a clean removal. Restart so Windows redetects the device, then install the approved package if needed.
Do not delete every device in a category. For graphics-driver cleanup, follow the GPU or PC maker’s documented procedure; aggressive third-party removal tools are not the first step.
Escalate in a controlled order
- Run the Windows troubleshooter relevant to audio, network or Bluetooth when available.
- Check the manufacturer for BIOS or firmware notes that specifically address the symptom.
- Use System Restore if the issue began after a known system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Test hardware diagnostics if the device disappears intermittently or fails in another operating environment.
- Back up files before Reset this PC or a clean installation.
Repeated disconnect sounds, physical damage, burning odor or failure in multiple operating systems can indicate hardware rather than a driver.
