How to Free Up Storage in Windows 11 Safely
Find what is using Windows storage, remove files deliberately and avoid cleaner tools that can delete something important.

Find what is using Windows storage, remove files deliberately and avoid cleaner tools that can delete something important. Use this practical checklist as a starting point and confirm model-specific instructions with the service or device maker.
Measure before deleting
Open Settings, System, Storage and let Windows calculate its categories. Also open This PC to see total free space. Large applications, personal videos and old downloads usually matter more than tiny cache files.
If capacity drops rapidly after every restart, investigate the cause instead of repeatedly deleting files. A growing application log, failed update or syncing loop may need repair.
Use Cleanup recommendations carefully
Review Temporary files and Cleanup recommendations item by item. Read the description and check whether Downloads or a previous Windows installation is included. A previous installation may be your short-term rollback path, so do not remove it until you are confident the new version works.
Emptying the Recycle Bin is permanent for those items. Open it first and restore anything uncertain.
Uninstall what you no longer use
Sort installed apps by size, then remove applications through Settings. Save project libraries, licences and custom presets first. Do not delete application folders manually as a substitute for its uninstaller.
Games may store saves separately from their installation folder. Confirm cloud-save status or copy local saves before removal.
Review personal and cloud files
Sort Downloads and video folders by size. Keep a verified backup before moving an archive to external storage. For OneDrive Files On-Demand, “free up space” leaves an online copy while removing the local copy; confirm sync has completed and understand that offline access will then require downloading it again.
Duplicate-finder tools can make unsafe guesses. Review duplicates visually and keep a backup before bulk deletion.
Automate only predictable cleanup
Storage Sense can remove temporary material and manage Recycle Bin or Downloads based on the settings you choose. Review those schedules before enabling it. Leave enough working space for updates and creative applications, then recheck after a normal week to confirm the space is not filling unexpectedly.
