How to Speed Up Windows 11
Diagnose a slow Windows 11 PC and improve startup, storage and everyday responsiveness.

Diagnose a slow Windows 11 PC and improve startup, storage and everyday responsiveness. Start with the checks below and confirm the effect of each change before moving on.

Measure before changing things
Open Task Manager and sort Processes by CPU, Memory and Disk. A single runaway app, nearly full drive or pending update often explains sudden slowness.
Improve startup and storage
Disable unnecessary startup apps in Settings, clear temporary files with Storage Sense and move large archives off the system drive. Leave security software and hardware utilities enabled unless you know they are optional.
When hardware is the limit
An SSD and adequate memory usually provide the most noticeable upgrades on an older PC. Check compatibility before buying parts. See more lightweight changes in our Windows 11 tips and general PC performance guide.
Match the fix to the bottleneck
In Task Manager, observe CPU, Memory and Disk while reproducing the slowdown. Constant high CPU suggests a busy application or background task. Memory pressure often appears when many browser tabs or large creative apps are open. A disk stuck at high activity may indicate updates, indexing, too little free space or an aging drive. Record the process name before ending anything so you can identify its purpose.
Work through reversible fixes
- Restart and install normal Windows and application updates.
- Leave at least enough free system-drive space for updates and temporary files.
- Disable unnecessary startup apps and remove programs you no longer use.
- Run a scan with Windows Security if the slowdown appeared unexpectedly.
- Test with browser extensions disabled if the problem occurs mainly online.
Change one category at a time and repeat the original task. Avoid disabling Windows services from random lists; those services can support networking, updates, accessibility and security.
Decide whether hardware is limiting you
An SSD usually transforms a PC that still boots from a mechanical hard drive. More memory helps when normal use repeatedly fills the installed RAM and forces applications to reload. Check the exact PC model, available slots, supported memory and storage interface before buying. On thin laptops, parts may be soldered and not upgradeable. High temperature can also reduce speed, so keep vents clear and investigate a fan that is constantly loud. Back up important files before opening the case or replacing storage.
